Lecture with Elliott Dabill

January 7, 2026 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join Certified California Naturalist Elliott Dabill for a free lecture entitled “Exploring Trinidad: A survey of our historic neighbor’s history and environment.” This 1-hour talk is part of FOAM’s First Wednesday Lecture Series. The event will be held at the Interpretive Center starting at 7 pm, followed by a Q&A session. This presentation will be both in-person and simulcast via Zoom at https://humboldtstate.zoom.us/j/88248246788?pwd=AuQSlOmC4Zwkq4hzWctlzTySkjKyjY.1#success.

Elliott, who is FOAM’s president and a self-described “all-around nature nerd,” will review some early history of Trinidad, peek inside a Yurok village, and view the complexity of who is currently in charge of what land territory and the near-ocean. Although Trinidad’s geology may be familiar, an entertaining exploration of how a subduction zone works should be memorable and make the connection to local earthquakes. A visual “walk” down Trinidad Beach will point out the rocks and landscape so that attendees can connect them to our complex geology. Finally, Elliott will examine what happened offshore 10 years ago, from the “Blob” that nearly destroyed the kelp forests that made our coastline famous.
